Case of media mogul Jimmy Lai: America paralyzed against China


- According to global affairs experts, Jimmy Lai's case is a concrete proof that the world is no longer bullied by America. Until now, America used to harass and isolate the countries that came in front of it, by imposing economic sanctions, but China is openly challenging it, but America cannot or will not spoil anything.

Hong Kong is a small country with a population of 75 lakhs, but now the whole world is focused on Hong Kong because Hong Kong has become a new battle ground between the two superpowers of the world, China vs. America. Hong Kong is ruled by China. China believes in suppressing the voice against it, so in December 2020, China arrested Hong Kong media mogul Manata Jimmy Lai and put him in jail. Countries including America protested against China at that time, but China swallowed the protest.

Now after three years, the case of treason has started against Lai and countries including America have again come into the fray. Along with America, Britain has demanded consular access to Jimmy Lee, claiming he is a UK citizen, but China has listened to him from one ear and dismissed him from the other. China has also accused Lai of colluding with foreign forces to pose a threat to Hong Kong's security. A number of countries, including the United States, have called the allegation false and demanded that the line be dropped, but China has not accepted it.

To show that they are with the line in the fight against China, in addition to America and UK, representatives of twenty countries of the West, including Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Switzerland, were present in the court, but China does not care about it. China has clearly said that there is no question of leaving Jimmy Lai.

Everyone is watching what America does after China's refusal, because the case of Lai is a question of America. This case is more important for India because Jimma Lai is a citizen of UK, a special ally of America. America talks big about the security of its own citizens or those of its allies.

America had indirectly threatened India regarding the killing of Khalistanist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada. America has also threatened India on the issue of the so-called conspiracy to kill Khalistan terrorist Gurpatwantsingh Pannun, who is an American citizen. The case of China abducting Jimmy Lai and putting him in jail is similar to the case of Nijjar and Pannun, it is to be seen whether America can show strong resistance against China or not.

As far as the issue of the line is concerned, America has proved to be waterless against China. A few months before Lai's arrest in August 2019, Lai met then US Vice President Mike Pence, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and National Security Advisor John Bolton. At that time, he said that the line was with America Line for the preservation of democracy.

China raised the line and put it in jail months later and gave a direct challenge to America, but America could not do anything. Lai was out on bail for a while but was not released after he was returned to jail in December. Meanwhile, America has been spitting but could not release the line. After Lai's arrest, China convicted Lai on various charges and sentenced him to 69 months in prison with a life sentence of 2026.

Lai has been kept in solitary confinement for three years in a dark cell where no one can see him. They are not allowed to meet anyone and all kinds of human rights have been taken away, but America can't dig up anything. China has loosened the US by gossiping against India in small talk.

Although Lai has been a UK citizen since 1996, China has not allowed a UK lawyer to appear to defend Lai. A case has been registered against Lai under China's National Security Law and he has been declared a traitor. Three judges who are China's pets have also been selected to try the case against Lai. By doing all this, Chin Lai is sitting with an arrangement that he will not be able to leave the prison for the rest of his life.

Given the charges leveled against Chin Lai, he is likely to be sentenced to at least 20 years in prison. Given that Lai is currently 76 years old, if found guilty, Lai will spend the rest of his life in prison. Along with Lai, Christian pastor Joseph Zen has also been charged with treason. Considering that Zen is 92 years old, there is no hope that both of them will come out no matter what America or its neighboring countries do.

Meanwhile, Hong Kong had complete freedom. Along with giving Hong Kong freedom of speech and expression, the British also gave it tremendous economic development.

In 1979, China claimed Hong Kong as its territory. Britain did not want a conflict with China so Britain also started talks with China. In 1984, an agreement was reached between Britain and China that Britain would leave Hong Kong after 15 years, i.e. in 1997. Under this agreement, British rule in Hong Kong ended in 1997 and Chinese rule began.

As per the agreement with Britain, China has recognized Hong Kong as an autonomous territory. Hong Kong has a separate administration and currency, the Hong Kong dollar, separate from China's official currency, the yuan. China shows to the world that it has not taken away the freedom of the people of Hong Kong, but internally, China is gradually increasing its influence by increasing the number of Chinese in Hong Kong, bringing new laws and creating an environment similar to China in Hong Kong.

Hong Kong people have been fighting against it for a long time. Jimmy Lee was at the forefront of this struggle through his newspaper, so the Chinese picked him up and put him in prison.

Jimmy Lai has become a media mogul by creating from scratch the issue of which China and America have come face to face. Lai was born in 1947 in a wealthy family in Guangzhou, South China. When the communist regime came to China in 1949, Lai's family came to the streets because the communist government took everything from the rich. Lai could not do anything at home, so he came to mainland China and from there took a boat to Hong Kong.

Lai started as a child laborer in Hong Kong, raised money to set up a small factory, and later built the world-famous Joda brand, which has more than 2,500 stores in 40 countries.

Lai started the Chinese-language Apple Daily from Hong Kong in 1995. Lai later launched a digital paper that became extremely popular. The paper was shut down in 2021 after Lai was accused of vehemently protesting China's efforts to suppress Hong Kong. As Lai is a British citizen, most of his assets are in Britain, but Hong Kong police have seized $2.5 million worth of assets.
