The brewing rift between Bhutan and China will aggravate the Doklam dispute

- Bhutan-China do not have diplomatic relations, yet visiting China's foreign minister threatened India's interests by hinting at resolving the Doklam dispute.

Bhutan. Nestled in the lap of the Himalayas is a lovely little country that is said to be the last 'Shangri La' of the world. Shangri-La is a place where everything is perfect. The fresh cool air, the snow-capped mountain peaks, the green valleys, the clear-white sky and the dark blue sheets of the rivers flowing low with its reflection... As if nature has not created this place with care for each and every thing!

It is said that the citizens of Bhutan are the happiest in the world. The world adopted the idea of happiness index much later, in Bhutan since 1972 the method of assessing well-being based on the growth happiness index has been in operation. It is the responsibility of the government departments to ensure that problems are minimized, chaos is minimized and the happiness of the people is maximized. After the happiness index method became popular all over the world and the record of European countries is now becoming brighter. Yet Bhutan remains a unique living example of cultural heritage. Hundreds of years of tradition permeate their daily lives. This hilly country that floats apart in the world map with boundless beauty is right in the middle of two huge nations India-China. On one side the Himalayan mountains stand protecting it. On one side is India, where Bhutan poses no threat. India has always protected Bhutan like an elder brother for hundreds of years.

The real threat to Bhutan has been from China for centuries. China wanted to swallow entire Bhutan like Tibet, but India's strong shield has always protected Bhutan. India-Bhutan has a special relationship in terms of foreign policy. India has given protected state status to Bhutan with a population of barely eight lakhs. That is, if someone attacks Bhutan, India retaliates without any delay. When the first foreign aid project was launched after independence, it started with Bhutan-Nepal. Even today, India's aid is the largest foreign aid to Bhutan. 2000 soldiers of India are stationed to train the personnel of the Royal Bhutan Army and other units are also equipped for the security of Bhutan. If Bhutan feels any threat, India stands by its side and protects it. Also conducts military operations on behalf of Bhutan.

India did a similar military operation in 2017. When the Chinese army entered Doklam and stopped the construction of the road, the Indian army retaliated. There was a stand-off situation between the armies of India and China at Doklam for over two months. The area called Doklam is at the tripoint of India-Bhutan-China. China claims this area between China's 'Chumbi Ghati', Bhutan's 'Ha District' and India's Sikkim based on historical documents and legends. There has been a dispute between Bhutan and China regarding it for years. China has repeatedly staked claim to Doklam as its territory. Construction begins near Doklam. Sometimes they try to keep Bhutan under pressure by increasing the deployment of army. For years, China's shadow is all over Bhutan, including Doklam, and for years, Bhutanese citizens are safe under India's protection.

But now a new equation has been formed in it, which is very important from India's point of view as well. Bhutan, living happily with economic-military-commercial assistance from India, has put its hand in the dragon's mouth in the name of developing strong foreign relations with China. The dangerous dragon has now started caressing Bhutan's hand, so Nanabhai Bhutan does not seem to be a threat at first glance, but India understands the impact of the dragon very well. Given a chance, this dragon will swallow Bhutan in a heartbeat. The dragon has similarly swallowed Tibet and has Taiwan in its sights. China has made plans to do the same to Bhutan, but India has clearly opposed it.

China and Bhutan do not have diplomatic relations. So far no foreign minister of Bhutan has visited China nor has any foreign minister of China visited Bhutan. There used to be talks between the representatives of both sides to resolve the dispute, but since 2016 the talks between Bhutan and China to resolve the border dispute have stopped. Bhutan, with India's support, had completely stopped bowing to China on border disputes including Doklam, but suddenly Bhutan's Foreign Minister Thandi Dorjee arrived on a visit to China. Tandi Darjee is the first Foreign Minister of Bhutan to go to China. In a meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, he said that Bhutan is ready to resolve the Doklam border dispute. The dispute between China and Bhutan regarding the 477 km long border has been going on for four decades, the biggest dispute is Doklam. If the Doklam dispute is resolved and it gets the 240 km area as claimed by China, it will become a big problem for India. India has so far opposed the Chinese military build-up in the Doklam area. As there is a dispute between Bhutan and China, the issue can be raised on the global stage as well, but if Bhutan and China come to an agreement, China can build and its reach to India will increase.

China intends to convince Bhutan to build the Doklam Corridor in the name of development of the border area. The indication given by Bhutan's foreign minister has put India on immediate alert. The Ministry of External Affairs warned Bhutan and urged them to ensure that the special relationship of the two countries is not affected. India clarified its stance on Doklam and said that India will not compromise on a sensitive issue like the Doklam Corridor. The Bhutanese government has to see that India's interests are not threatened by the agreement to resolve the Bhutan-China border dispute.

Well, India has rightly shown proactiveness in time. It is not in the country's interest for China to increase its military power along India's border under the pretext of a corridor. If China's lentils are swallowed now, it won't take long to swallow the whole of Bhutan!
