63,000 animals including 73 elephants died in accidents

- Lions of Girnar also die due to railway collisions: dogs and cats are not accounted for.

There are many cases of animal cruelty. Animals killed by vehicles on public roads, especially dogs and cats, run over the dead bodies of vehicles and in a short time, they die. Small animals die in accidents because they suddenly cross the road, but according to a report, more than 63,000 animals have died due to accidents in the last four years.

Among the animals that died accidentally, 73 elephants and four lions were killed. Elephants die due to railway collisions. The Railways has also announced safety measures to prevent the death of elephants, but these do not seem to be being implemented. There is a Wild Life Protection Act but it seems to be rarely enforced.

Where there are unguarded railway platforms, it can be said that they have become gates of death for dumb animals. The Comptroller and Auditor General of India's report on performance on Indian Railways last month mentioned the above issues.

According to the 2017 elephant census, there are 29,000 elephants in India and according to the 2020 lion census, there are approximately 680 lions in Gir National Park.

According to the instructions given by the World Wildlife Fund of India to the six zonal railway accounts of the country, the Ministry of Railways has circulated the instructions to every railway officer in June-2015.

Where the railway passes through forests, special measures have been taken to prevent the death of animals, especially elephants. According to CAG reports, there were 63,245 cases of animal accidents during 2027-18 and 2020-21.

It was ordered to implement the issues jointly approved by the Ministry of Forest and Environment and the Ministry of Climate Change regarding the death of elephants on railway tracks passing through forests.

Among these issues, it was suggested to remove the sprouted bushes around the railway track and to remove food, food waste etc. on the railway track and to keep the speed of the engine drivers slow. The main reason for clearing the bush around the railway tracks was that the elephants could move away from the tracks quickly. He can get space for that.

The Railway Department is satisfied with just issuing the circular but a special note has to be taken as to whether special precautionary measures have been taken on the tracks where elephant deaths are highest. After the circular, elephants should die less on such tracks but no significant change is seen.

Similarly, plans have been made to save the lions of Girnar and several precautionary measures have been suggested to the Bhavnagar Division of Railways. In which, training of the railway staff every six months and putting Go Slow sign boards for engine drivers around the track has also been implemented.

The fact is that there needs to be some human sympathy for dumb animals dying in accidents. For elephants and lions, the government is showing awareness but the animals can be saved if they are trampled on the road. It is also a fact that many people have to go to the hospital after rescuing dogs from the road. But there is no other creature on earth that has intelligence and sensitivity as much as human. When 73 elephants died on the railway tracks, it can be linked to the negligence of the railway department.
