Ladakh After Uttarakhand: 'Three Idiots' Fame Wangdu's Climate Fast

Sonam Wangchuk has shocked everyone by announcing a five-day fast from January 26 to improve people's lives.

Wangchuk has appealed to Modi to immediately stop all business activities in Ladakh. As large scale mining and other industrial activities have started in Ladakh, the glaciers will start melting. Due to this, there will come a time when people will not get even five liters of water for drinking now.

The disaster at Joshimath was not averted due to indiscriminate excavation and construction in Uttarakhand, now there is a warning of a similar disaster in the Union Territory of Ladakh, separated from Jammu and Kashmir. Aamir Khan played the role of Phungsukh Wangdu in the highly successful film 'Three Idiots'. The inspiration for this role came from real life Sonam Wangchuk. Staying in Ladakh, Sonam Wangchuk is trying to improve people's lives with her inventions and social service.

Sonam Wangchuk has shocked everyone by announcing a five-day fast from January 26. Wangchuk is going to fast by sitting at an altitude of 18 thousand feet near Khardungla Pass in minus 40 degree temperature. Wangchuk called the fast a 'climate fast' as Wangchuk is most concerned about the deteriorating environment of Ladakh. Wangchuk released a 13-minute video and told Prime Minister Narendra Modi that all is not well in Ladakh. Wangchuk has urged Modi to protect the highly fragile Ladakh. Wangchuk has covered many issues related to Ladakh issues in his videos. Wangchuk has spoken on issues ranging from including Ladakh in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution to granting autonomy to protect the rights of tribals.

Wangchuk also talked about the problems of the people of Ladakh and what the people of Ladakh expect from the Modi government. It is also emphasized that the local people should be empowered to take decisions for the economic development of Ladakh, but Wangchuk's biggest concern is the growing business and industrial activities in the Ladakh region. According to Wangchuk, people in Ladakh are already suffering from water shortage. Ladakh has very little water and receives four inches of rain every year. This rain also falls in the form of snow which is meaningless so people depend on glaciers. People survive on water from melting glacier ice. Most of the time the snow remains frozen so very little water is available to the people. On an average, people get barely five liters of water per person. Drinking, cooking, bathing and other activities have to be done from this five liters of water. From that alone one can estimate how difficult life is in Ladakh. Wangchuk has appealed to Modi to immediately stop all business activities in Ladakh. As large scale mining and other industrial activities have started in Ladakh, the glaciers will start melting. Due to this, there will come a time when people will not get even five liters of water for drinking now. Wangchuk also warned against the damage to the soil due to increasing business and industrial activities in Ladakh. Wangchuk's video has shocked everyone because no one knows this reality of Ladakh. Leh-Ladakh is abundant in natural beauty. We people go there for Leh-Ladakh tour. Skiing resorts in Leh are attractive to everyone, so a large number of people flock there. The Indian government diverted tourists to Ladakh after the influence of terrorism in the Kashmir Valley increased. Traveling to Ladakh is not a problem and people enjoy it. Due to this, there is a common belief that the people of Ladakh are also green. Wangchuk's video presents a different reality. What Wangchuk talked about the water problem is shocking. Doctors advise to drink four to five liters of water daily to stay healthy. Now how can people who get five liters of water in the whole day implement this advice? Meaning, there is a serious threat to their health. What Wangchuk has warned against is booming resorts and mining in the mountains. Due to this, raids of outsiders are landing in Leh-Ladakh. The total population of Ladakh is around three lakh people. If those people do not get enough water, then where is the water for the outsiders? However, those who sit with the business should preserve the convenience of the customer in any way. Glacier ice is turned into water to preserve the facilities of tourists coming from outside. Due to this the levels of glaciers are decreasing. This activity is gradually increasing and there will come a time when the glacier will not exist. At that time, the people from outside will continue to pack beds and bags, but Wangchuk is worried about what the local people will do. Industry has also entered Ladakh. Mining has never been done in Ladakh before. Local people brought stones from the mountains to build houses and lime was extracted from them. Due to this, there is a lot of lime here. Lime is the major raw material for making cement, so now the lime is being mined everywhere and the mountains are being broken. Wangchuk has warned before that there is a threat to the earth because of it. In short, the condition of Ladakh is also becoming like Uttarakhand. Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri and Yamunotri in Uttarakhand, apart from the four dhams, the ground has been hollowed out due to indiscriminate excavations to build resorts, hotels, guesthouses, roads etc. for people flocking to other places of worship. Due to this, the ground is collapsing and many places including Joshimath are in danger of collapsing. Wangchuck has warned the government before this situation arises. It is necessary for the Modi government to give a positive response when it has announced a fast to stop all this. Otherwise heaven on earth Ladakh will become hell.

Wangchuck built campuses powered by solar energy

Sonam Wangchuk, who went on a fast to stop business related activities in Ladakh, is considered a genius. Aamir Khan's role of Phungsukh Wangdu in 'Three Idiots' was inspired by Sonam Wangchuk.

Wangchuk did not go to school until he was nine years old because there was no school in his area. His mother gave him local language and basic education. When his father became a minister in the Kashmir government, Wangchuk went to Srinagar, but he did not understand the language taught in the school there. Due to this, he was sent to study in a school in Delhi.

Wangchuk's father wanted him to become a civil engineer but Wangchuk wanted to become a mechanical engineer so his father stopped paying. Wangchuk became a mechanical engineer at his own expense. After doing engineering, Wangchuk came to Ladakh in 1988 and started an educational institute and improved the standard of living of the people by making one invention after another. The solar powered campus built by Wangchuk does not use electricity or petrol etc. Heaters, cookers, lights run only with solar energy. Wangchuk also built artificial glaciers whose water can be used in winter.

There is no water even for agriculture in Ladakh

Ladakh does not have simple water even for farming. The snow on the mountains melts and turns into water which is used for irrigation. Small ninks are made to divert the snow water to the fields. This water is also very less, so crops that require more water like rice do not ripen at all. Wheat and barley are the two crops grown.

Because of this, serving rice in Ladakhis' meals was considered a luxury for years. Since the population of Ladakh is only three and a half lakh, the government now provides rice in cheap grain shops, so people have started eating rice.
