The pitfalls of American-like roads were exposed when the Bundelkhand Express was washed away
- Most of India's politicians are not aware of the reality when they sit down to speak, the nose of the government is cut off when it beats.
In Uttar Pradesh, the Bundelkhand Expressway was washed away within five days of its inauguration in July. There was a lot of talk about how this expressway would revolutionize UP, but when the news came that the road was washed away, there was an uproar.
Most of the politicians in India, when they sit down to speak, speak whatever comes to their tongues without realizing the reality. They do not even realize that they will be ridiculed because of it. Union Minister for Roads, Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari has provided an example. While inaugurating the Indian Road Congress in Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh, Gadkari announced that by 2024, the roads of Uttar Pradesh will be better than the United States, i.e. America. Gadkari also claimed that the Modi government will soon approve 5 lakh crore rupees to improve the roads in UP.
Gadkari also imparted the knowledge that building a good road requires more willpower than money. Stating that the Mumbai-Pune Expressway was built only because of willpower, Gadkari claimed that if there is no willpower, all plans get stuck in committees. Gadkari imparted a lot of other knowledge.
All these things are full of mystical advice given by ministers in government programs so it is not meaningful to talk about them but the fact that UP roads will be better than US is of interest to anyone.
It is not the first time that Gadkari has made a plan to improve UP's roads by 2024 and make it better than the US. Considering that it is now October, 2024 is 15 months away. Gadkari has held the Ministry of Roads, Transport and Highways ever since Narendra Modi's government came to the Centre. It is said that Gadkari has done a good job but still the roads of India are not like US. What Gadkari mentioned is that most of India's highways or expressways are nothing to praise, barring exceptional highways like the Mumbai-Pune Expressway.
We must see the condition of the highways or expressways built by the central government in Gujarat itself. While going on those roads, you don't feel like you are traveling on the roads of America or Europe. At present, there are gaps in the monsoons, so most of the waist belts are loosened while going out on the road.
Gadkari built many roads in eight and a half years but most of the roads are in very bad condition. A number of roads have fallen into disrepair due to lack of repair. Accidents happen due to bad roads and people die in them.
Due to bad roads in India, 1.55 lakh people died annually in 2021. Many reasons are responsible for accidents but one reason is bad roads. Gadkari cannot make any improvement in all this. All the roads are not Gadkari's responsibility but the same is the condition of the roads made by the central government.
Six months ago we saw what happened to the expressway built by Gadkari's ministry in Uttar Pradesh itself. The Bundelkhand Expressway was washed away within five days of its inauguration in July. There was a lot of talk about how this expressway would revolutionize UP, but when the news came that the road was washed away, there was an uproar.
This is an example, but it happens every day that a bridge or a road breaks down within days of its construction. Given the example of UP, this incident took place in UP. Now Ram knows that Gadkari has suddenly got a magic wand with the help of which he will make the roads of UP like US in 15 months but looking at the history of Gadkari, his talk seems more fishy than reality.
Gadkari's talk that the Modi government will sanction five lakh rupees to make the roads of UP like the US is not digested. As Gadkari says, roads are not made by will, but money is required. No road can be built without money.
1.35 lakh crore rupees was allocated for road-highway this year in the Modi government's budget.
This amount is for the road-highway of the entire country. Experts are expecting an increase of 35 percent when Nirmala Sitharaman presents the Union Budget in February 2023. Means, the road-highway budget has a budget of around 1.80 lakh crores.
With road-highway projects given to private companies on a turn-key basis, there is an investment of about 2 lakh crores in road-highway in India. Even if we keep the same ratio in mind, next year maximum investment of 3 lakh crores will come in the whole country. Even if we add the amount given by the government, it will not be 5 lakh crore rupees. In this situation, the question is how UP alone gets approval of 5 lakh crores.
It is a different matter to give permission on paper only by talking, but in actuality it is not possible to approve 5 lakh crore even for the roads of the entire country. Gadkari's ministry itself has planned to build 23 national highways by 2025. Its total cost is 5.35 lakh crore. There is not enough funds for it, from where to get 5 lakh crores for UP alone?
Considering the condition of most of the roads in India, it would be heaven if roads like the US were made, but Gadkari talks as he likes, there is a lot of work to be done in the road sector in India. Only 3% of the existing highways in India are national highways i.e. four lanes. 75 percent of the total highways in India are two-lane highways.
Gadkari needs to think how these roads can be made bigger instead of making roads like US.
Gadkari is clever at talking big
Gadkari gets publicity in the media by talking big but then sinks. Currently, Gadkari was sitting in the water talking big on the issue of strict rules including mandatory six airbags in cars and before that a fine of up to a thousand rupees for not wearing a seat belt.
In March, Gadkari claimed in the Lok Sabha that by 2024, India's roads will be like America's. Former US President John F. Quoting Kennedy's words, Gadkari said that America's roads are not good because America is rich, but America is rich because America's roads are good. Gadkari had denied that, to make India prosperous, I have decided that before December 2024, India's road infrastructure will become like that of America. Gadkari had announced in 2021 that he would sign an order in two to three days mandating the production of flex-fuel engines by car manufacturing companies. After that, the night passed. India is yet to mandate flex-fuel for companies.
Lalu promises to make the road like Hemamalini's cheeks
Before Gadkari, there is no leader who has raised the issue of improving the condition of roads. When Lalu Prasad Yadav was the Chief Minister of Bihar, he claimed that in five years, we will make the roads of Bihar like Hema Malini's cheeks. That means, we will make the very smooth and shiny. Lalu indirectly praised the beauty of Hema Malini, known as the dream girl, but it was criticized a lot. Well, Lalu Prasad is gone and now his son is in power in Bihar but the roads of Bihar are the same.
When Kamal Nath's government was in Madhya Pradesh, road minister P.C. Sharma also said that the condition of roads in Madhya Pradesh is like the cheeks of Kailash Vijayvargiya, but we will make roads like the cheeks of Hema Malini. Last year, Shiv Sena leader Gulabrao Patil of Jalgaon district in Maharashtra challenged that come to my constituency and see the condition of the roads. I will resign if the roads are not like Hema Malini's cheeks.
