Char din ki Chandni.

The Hamas-Israeli war that has been going on for the past month and a half finally ended when the Israeli parliament approved a cease-fire agreement. In the meantime, however, the war has left more than 14,000 civilians dead and 2,700 others missing in Gaza. Most of these missing people are said to be under rubble, which means there is no chance of survival even if their bodies are not found. Also, this ceasefire, achieved at the cost of such heavy losses, is also temporary. Its duration is only four days which ended yesterday on Monday night. Both the parties have talked about extending this break but uncertainty is prevailing. During this time, Hamas has released hostages, including women and children. In return, Palestinians imprisoned in Israel have been released.

Apparently, the biggest factor that made this ceasefire possible was the 240 people who were taken hostage by Hamas attackers in the October 7 terrorist attack. It includes citizens of 40 countries including Israel. The pressure for their safe release is on the governments of various countries. Even in Israel itself, the pressure on Netanyahu was steadily increasing. If all the aspects related to this agreement are properly implemented then people from both sides have been freed from imprisonment in just four days. For the first time, people facing 24-hour bombardment in Gaza have felt relief. Humanitarian aid has also reached them and hospitals closed due to lack of fuel have been able to reopen.

Regrettably and worryingly, behind all this the feeling that this relief is only for four days has been working. Now and then the same situation is going to happen again. Does this mean that both Hamas and Israel have used this period to strengthen their preparations for a more devastating war four days from today? All possibilities are pointing in this direction. However, about 190 hostages still remain in Hamas custody. With this in mind, Israel has said that even after this period expires, it can extend the ceasefire by one day in exchange for the release of every ten hostages. By any measure, it would be a good thing if the ceasefire were extended, but it cannot be considered sufficient.

The question is what will happen after all the hostages are released in 19 days? The need is not only to evacuate our people safely, but to realize that the loss of innocent people from any side is unfortunate. So there must be a permanent halt to the loss of life in Gaza in the name of eliminating Hamas. Four Thai nationals have been released along with the Israelis as part of a separate deal brokered by Qatar and Egypt. Seven Thai nationals were said to be released the next day, but later only four were released. Hamas has signed a separate agreement with Israel to release Thai citizens. In the deal that Hamas made with Israel, 3 Palestinian prisoners were released in exchange for one Israeli citizen.

Hamas commandos have made a lot of drama in freeing the hostages. Also, Hamas cited the delay as Israel interfering with the selection of prisoners for release and preventing aid from reaching civilians in northern Gaza during the four-day ceasefire. Israel also did not let the killings go down during the break. Mediators from Qatar and Egypt tried to allay Hamas' concerns. Hamas said it had responded positively to Egyptian and Qatari mediators and that they had pledged to support all terms of the agreement on Israel's behalf. In such a situation he should not deviate from the terms. The world has to know soon whether the end of a temporary hiatus will be extended or if the agonizing bells will ring again. And this is not a new surprise war. This is a dormant volcano that shakes the peace of the world by spewing embers from time to time.
