Similar to Punjab, there is massive drug trafficking in Jammu and Kashmir

- Narcotic drugs are a bigger threat than terrorism

- The Inside Story

- As many as 37 villages on the border of Rajouri and Poonch are involved in drug trafficking.

In terms of drug menace, Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir can be put in the same category. Where terrorism is high, drug trafficking is also high. When it comes to drugs, the first name comes to Punjab. Punjab is so notorious for drugs that it has earned the title of Udta Punjab. Terrorism kills innocent people as well as addicts the youth.

Police chiefs say drugs are a bigger threat than terrorism. It is not only in Punjab or Jammu Kashmir that drugs are caught but in many cities including Ahmedabad, drug shipments are caught. It is said that many times more goods have reached the hands of sellers in the market than what is caught.

The structure of the drug mafia consists of big heads ranging from cops to politicians. Intoxicants coming from the border include powders, injection tablets etc. The drug mafia's network is so strong that the goods are delivered to clubs and peddlers within 24 hours of landing.

Jammu and Kashmir Police Chief Dilbagh Singh recently drew the attention of the government saying that drugs pose a greater threat to society than terrorism. People caught in the clutches of drugs destroy their families and many families have been destroyed.

Dilbagh Singh has said that innocent people are killed due to terrorism but drug addicts die slowly. Pakistan deals in drugs to fund terrorism and smuggles them through the Indian border. It is traded across the border through drones or terrorists.

Pakistan, which used to be in the business of spreading terrorism across the border, now trades drugs and creates a network that reaches out to addicts across India. It can be said that terrorism has been curbed in Punjab but the drug business has doubled.

The number of people involved in the drug trade increases as there is no monitoring of drug trafficking. Goods smuggled from the border of Punjab and Kashmir are easily transported to major cities. Because of this, its addiction has increased to college youth. Among the 1.3 crore population of Jammu and Kashmir, five to seven lakh youth are believed to be addicted. Such youths are 13 to 30 years old.

As local people earn more in drug trafficking, they have turned daily trafficking into a business. It is said that now drug mafias are paying for goods through crypto currency. Drug mafia networks are often caught but their business heirs are back in the fray.

People are ready to join in border smuggling as everyone gets huge financial benefits. Entire villages along the Line of Actual Control are involved in drug trafficking.

There are 37 villages on the border of Rajouri and Poonch which are involved in drug trafficking. Drug mafias use terrorist networks for cross-border smuggling. At present the people caught in the trawl are small fish. The authorities need to catch the big head.
