The dark life behind the bars of an Indian jail

- Comma
- There are about five lakh criminals in the jails of the country, but three lakh of them are the unfortunate ones whose punishment has not yet been finalised, but they are serving time in jail.
The jails of Uttar Pradesh alone house twenty-five percent of the total number of criminals in the country, which shows how high the crime rate is. Crime has not changed because of Mr. Aditya Yogi. Encounter-vindicated heroism is life-threatening. Earlier, the blockade that Yogi had made by various revenue officials to prevent the farmers from going in the Kisan movement was a crime against the government itself. The government has not developed any systematic procedure to investigate the condition of our country's prisons. Because of this, the outside world does not know what life is like behind bars?
Jail authorities keep the prisoners in a very bad and to some extent inhumane manner and the other side of this coin is that if a criminal uses a simple mobile outside the jail, he ends up using an android in the jail! Earlier, the incident in which the prisoners fought internally in the Ludhiana jail made the home account of the Indian government sleepless and the central government then talked about making strict rules with the new prison manual, but the NDA government could not take any such steps. Now there is a need for such rules that instead of the prisoner, the prison officials have to be taken into custody. Instead of what is found in prison, it is time to ask what is not found in prison.
There was a clash between two groups of inmates in the Ludhiana jail that the prison authorities could not control. The inmates had seized the weapons of the policemen serving in the jail, and ended up in the barracks. Then, when fresh police convoys arrived from outside, the inmates opened fire on them with their own weapons. A total of ninety rounds were fired in the face-off. It can be inferred from this that the fact that we believe that there is such a strict regime in the prison that not even a clock moves there turns out to be really hollow and ridiculous.
There are about five lakh criminals in the country's jails, but three lakh of them are those whose punishment has not been finalised. Such remand prisoners are also imprisoned till the completion of judicial process. Uttar Pradesh and Bihar are at the top in terms of overflowing jails. Every inmate of every jail in the country has a sensational autobiography, but our jails have become heart-pounding like a novel. When the politicians have visited the prison, they have only done the job of laying down the rules of the prison sitting there. The number of people with criminal history in both BJP and Congress is not small. BJP is also seen giving high posts to those with criminal history. In Uttar Pradesh, there is a popular belief that those with a criminal history are more successful in politics. This belief seems to have been accepted by the sitting BJP.
Even so, many myths about Indian jails are prevalent in the world. British courts have also criticized Indian prisons in various recent incidents. Earlier, criminals used to escape underground on parole, now the cases of jailers also escaping and hiding underground have come to the office of Gujarat Police. Several indictments of the Human Rights Commission stand against Indian prisons. In our own Gujarat there are many prisoners whose fixed period of sentence is over but the jail authorities have not yet released them from the jail due to pending paperwork. There are scores of inmates in many prisons across the country who are serving additional gratuitous sentences after completing their sentences.
Prisoners cannot even present their plight to the court from jail, as they are subject to jail. Earlier, the videos of Surendranagar Jail in Gujarat went viral in which it was clearly shown how much the police officers are oppressing the prisoners and what kind of prices some items are sold in the jail. Some enterprising criminals exposed all these facts to the public without bothering the police station. After much controversy over the National Crime Report reports, the caste-caste list of prisoners is no longer released. Yet apparently the Human Rights Commission says that Uttar Pradesh's jails are overwhelmingly backward.
The history of Sabarmati Jail is not too old to turn pages. Many cases of negligence have also been reported there. In India, there have been frequent incidents where the prison walls are just so called. It is also said about the jails of Punjab that the prisoners in the jails are big sellers of drugs and there is a system of it running in the entire state. It seemed that after the coming of the Captain Government of Punjab, action would be taken and an investigation would be done, but the darkness behind the bars of the jail has not lifted in Punjab either. People all over the country rarely get to witness such incidents when riots are going on in prisons. Now and then some inmates start live streaming internal events on social media.
Indian prisons are in dire need of renovation. In the world behind bars, a different kind of dark alarm beats. Sometimes its authority goes beyond the jail authorities and incidents like Ludhiana and Surendranagar take shape out of it. Whenever there is an inspection of the jail, the bugle of sub security is sounded, but the reality is the opposite. Various autonomous organizations have also raised the issue that many jails in the country are accommodating more prisoners than their capacity, but the state and central government are still not paying attention to it. The government may still expect some more incidents like Ludhiana.
