Is there gender equality? .

The Supreme Court has once again come down hard on the growing patriarchal thinking in the country's security infrastructure. This time the matter is connected with the Coast Guard. However, no decision has been made yet. The next hearing in the case is scheduled for Friday, but the Supreme Court bench has decided that there will be no further delay in granting permanent commissions to women in the Coast Guard. Discrimination between women and men in the Indian government and the Indian army is not new, but the Supreme Court is saddened by the fact that this practice has been going on for so many years. On the one hand, the same bugle is sounded in the country, but the reality is different. Women in India work before and after marriage. Enters the race of competitive exams and wins.

There are some castes in the country in which the daughters have gone far ahead and the sons have been left behind. That is, they cannot keep up with the times. This is seen in many families. If a more educated daughter is married to a less educated Murtia, whether they are called Sajodu or which is a mystery. All these are new challenges against the traditional marriage practice called arranged marriage.

The question that the Supreme Court has teased is a serious one. What is surprising in this regard is how any part of our government structure can be so indifferent to the ongoing debate on gender equality in the country and the world. Keep in mind that women's struggle for equal treatment in the armed forces continued during this period as well.

They struggle for their identity there. Once before S. In a 2020 decision, the Supreme Court directed the Army to give permanent commission to women. The court rejected all the arguments given against him. However, similar arguments were heard in this case regarding the Coast Guard. For example, it was said that the operation of the Coast Guard is different from that of the Army or the Navy. Appropriately, without going into the details of such arguments, the Court stopped them by saying that arguments of functional difference e. S. Will not work in 2024. Whatever the differences and whatever the obstacles, women have to be given permanent commissions. Obviously, now the question will not be whether to give it or not, the issue will only be how to implement the commission system.

The question is also that when this issue was raised in the armed forces, it was also said that the government should take the initiative to create a gender neutral policy, but no significant efforts seem to have been made by the government in this direction. Otherwise, instead of trying to enumerate the 'functional difficulties' before the Supreme Court, it would have been told how much success has been achieved in overcoming those obstacles. The government is not in a position to place the necessary documents on the table of the court. If the government has formulated a gender neutral policy, it should bring it to the notice of the court and declare its impartiality on gender discrimination. Although the Supreme Court has also clarified that the case is not limited to the petitioner, but even if we refer to this case as an example, the petitioner has saved 300 lives at sea during her 14 years of service as a pilot in the Indian Coast Guard and she has 4500 flying hours. Which is the highest in both male and female categories in the armed forces.

This case is an excuse, but the tradition of patriarchy in our country may be a family tradition up to the threshold of the house, but outside the threshold, every woman should feel the equality about which many politicians have made many speeches under the sky of this country. The central government needs to show compassion to the women of any creed or religious family in India, who bear the brunt of the harsh experiences of the male-dominated society.
