- With the presence of Emmanuel Macron, France holds the record for the most number of chief guests on India's Republic Day, with six presidents being India's chief guests.

- India-France bilateral trade stands at 1000 to 1200 crore Euros and aims to reach 1500 crore Euros by 2025. Cooperation between the two countries has increased in the past decade in many fields including defense, space, technology. More than a thousand French companies are operating in India

In 1998, when India conducted its second nuclear test at Pokhran, it was criticized worldwide. Pakistan once again got an opportunity to raise the Kashmir raga in the UN. So burning oil was poured into China's belly. India's official criticism session was held at the UN. India was accused of provoking neighboring countries and America imposed sanctions on India. At the behest of America, several European countries stopped trade with India. Countries like Japan also distanced themselves from India.

But three countries kept distance from action against India. As those three countries had a veto, the restrictions imposed on India were gradually lifted. Those three countries are France, Britain and Russia. India-Russia relations have been very strong since the beginning. Both countries manufacture weapons together. In the beginning, India had the support of Russia in the wars against Pakistan, Russia standing by India's side and helping Pakistan while America was helping Pakistan has a different history. Britain ruled India for years, but then Britain has had harmonious relations with independent India since its inception. India is a member of British Commonwealth. That is why India-Britain bilateral relations were going on for years.

Apart from these two, the cooperation of France was a pleasant dream for India. Most of the countries in Europe criticized India or imposed sanctions on the behest of America, whereas France remained silent and supported India. The reason behind this was the strategic partnership between India and France that started earlier that year.

French President Jacques Chirac was the chief guest at India's Republic Parade on January 26, 1998, before the Pokhran test in May. At that time, a historic strategic partnership agreement was signed between the Governments of India and France. Strategic partnership means bilateral relations beyond diplomatic relations. India and France had diplomatic relations since 1947, but after the strategic partnership of 1998, both countries could enter each other's market, produce together, invest freely in each other's country, and do defense deals. Increase cultural exchange. India-France strategic partnership completes 25 years. Both the countries also celebrated it. As part of this, France made Prime Minister Narendra Modi the special guest at the Bastille Day parade in July this year. Now Emmanuel Macron has become the special guest of India's 75th Republic Parade.

India had earlier invited US President Joe Biden to be the chief guest, but Biden could not travel to India. Biden is busy right now as it is an election year. Biden has been targeted by the opposition because of his foreign policy and son Hunter's taxes. As Trump is likely to lose ground, Biden wants to focus on America by making as few foreign trips as possible. Since Biden was not coming, the central government invited Emmanuel Macron. Macron had come to India for the G-20 meeting in September last year. He has again come to India after a gap of three and a half months. Macron, who was present at India's Republic Day parade, became the sixth president of France.

Along with Macron's presence in the 2024 Republic Day Parade, the record of most French Presidents being present in India's Republic Day Parade has also been recorded. So far, France is the only country to be the chief guest for the sixth time in 75 years. This streak started in 1976 with Prime Minister Jacques Chirac. For the second time in 1980, French President Valery Guiscard became the chief guest. In 1998, Chirac was again the chief guest at the Republic Parade. Chirac was the President at that time and it was under his leadership that India-France strategic partnership began. President Nicolas Sarkozy came in 2008. Francisco Hollande arrived in 2016. In this way, the heads of the French government have come to India's Republic Parade five times before.

It is also likely that some important agreements will be signed between India and France this year. France is the most powerful member of the European Union. France's influence has increased since Britain left the European Union. The French President and the Prime Minister of India are likely to sign an agreement to increase trade with the European Union. Macron will stay in India for two days, during which the trade agreement with the European Union, which has been stalled for six-seven years, will move forward. A free trade agreement was to be signed between India and the European Union. Negotiations continued till 2013, but then due to differences on various issues, it was stopped. In 2022, the process has progressed again. Now, with the efforts of France, it is likely that the agreement will be reached.

Modi-Macron have a very good personal relationship. The two always meet warmly when they meet on the global stage. During Macron's tenure, France has consistently supported India's demand for permanent membership in the UN Security Council. The economic relations between India and France have improved. Currently bilateral trade is between 1000 to 1200 crore Euros and by 2025 the target is to increase the bilateral trade to 1500 crore Euros. Cooperation between the two countries has increased in many fields including defense, space, technology. More than a thousand French companies are operating in India. As Macron favors a liberal economic policy, there will be new opportunities for Indian companies to invest in France. India intends to increase economic-defense and technology cooperation with Europe in the next decade and France will be a very important partner in this. Macron's liberal, moderate, progressive policies will suit India better.
