Indian hockey struggle.

Indian hockey struggle

Far from being champions once again, India could not even make it to the last eight of the Men's Hockey World Cup, which is being held at home for the second time in a row and the fourth time overall. The world victory last achieved in 1975, i.e. almost five decades ago, is still seen standing at the highest position in Indian hockey, showing the failure of subsequent generations. Having lost a 3-1 lead at one stage in the pre-quarter final against New Zealand, the Indian team was hit by an injury to goalkeeper Sreejesh in the first and overall sixth penalty of sudden death after the penalty shootout. However, the reason for the team's defeat was not Sreejesh's injury, but the failure of top players like captain Harmanpreet and Shamsher Singh to score goals, as both the stalwarts had golden chances to win India, which they failed to take. Finally, the dream of winning the World Cup remained only a dream as India lost 4-5 at the end of ninth penalty and fourth attempt in sudden death.

The defeat by the Indian men's hockey team was yet another symbol of the players' failure to deal with the pressure of crunch time and strike at the right time. Maintaining mental composure and timing under pressure is the first condition of success and this is where Indian hockey has been seen to fall deeply. The Indian hockey team has a great start, but rarely ends. The deficiency of not being able to save the lead in the closing moments is decades old, yet it is unfortunate that Indian hockey managers, coaches or even the future makers have not been able to solve it.

Khandahar bata raha hai ki imarat kitni buland thi the phrase Indian hockey has been chanting for many years now needs to stop. Not only this, instead of looking at small successes through a microscope, it is necessary to use binoculars for them and look forward to the World Cup or the Olympics. There is also a need to avoid so-called critics who instead of criticizing the players or the federation for the failure, blame artificial turf or foreign rules, who alienate Indian hockey and fans from reality and impose their blame-on-everyone mentality on the society.

There is also a Hockey Association of India, known as Hockey India only, for the fall of Indian hockey. With the Hockey World Cup going on at home, how can hockey rise when the media and social media are covered with articles and pictures of the bilateral cricket series or the wedding of KL Rahul and Athiya Shetty. In IPL, the Ranji Trophy players get recognition all over the country after one or two matches, Indian hockey players do not get half the recognition in the age of media-social media. With the names of foreign cricketers being spoken loudly, if the fans remember even two-four players of the current team, it will be a great achievement.

India is known as the home of hockey. The wind of change has blown in it too. Now India needs to keep pace with the change. Remembering and saluting the glory of the past and teaching the present and the future, when grandfathers used to bring gold medals in Olympics, when do you bring them now? If hockey is to be reinstated, respect must be given to hockey and hockey players. The players have to be prepared in a scientific manner by adopting modern coaching methods. Apart from promoting hockey at the school level, the hockey-players debate has to be awakened in the new generation as well, only then can Indian hockey regain its lost status as a world champion. Otherwise, future generations will also be proud of the 1975 World Cup victory and sigh over the present.
