Effect of cross voting.

Changing party allegiance of MPs and MLAs is not a new thing in our country nor is cross voting a new phenomenon. However, the large-scale cross-voting seen in last Tuesday's election to 15 Rajya Sabha seats is being considered significant. The reason is that this time the trend has broken the old pattern in many ways, making criticisms on the old lines seem disproportionate. MLAs belong to any party, but they are influenced by the incumbent. Thus, among the bridge building works that the BJP has taken up in our country, some invisible bridges have also been built which go to the homes of the opposition parties. On these invisible bridges moves a special human species called Ayaram-Gayaram, which has facilitated the purchase of finished goods by the ruling party. In Saurashtra, Mal-cattle is spoken with the word.

As is usually the case, this time too a section is calling crossvoting a result of abuse of power and undemocratic tendencies of the ruling party. But this time the criticism does not seem sharp, as the Congress is also not lagging behind in this matter. In Karnataka, where it is in government, one of its candidates won due to crossvoting by a BJP MLA. That is, the people in the country who criticize the other party's misdeeds, they themselves hide the same vices behind the curtain. These are signs of the decline of the country's civic traditions, as politicians ultimately come from the commons. The people who often criticize the politicians need to introspect themselves.

Crossvoting got the most attention in UP. First, the number of seats here was the highest. Second, the number of crossvoting MLAs was also high. Third, crossvoting MLAs were also large in size. The Samajwadi Party chief whip, who hails from Rae Bareli, was himself involved in crossvoting. It is also considered important from the point of view of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. This is to create an awkward situation for the opposition INDIA alliance, after he joined the BJP and bagged a ticket from Rae Bareli. The condition of Rae Bareli has now become like that of Jhumri Talaiya. Rae Bareli has been the seat of the Gandhi family. Now the Nehru-Gandhi family can only listen to Farmaish's songs from there. Confusion is prevailing whether the voting will be held as per his request or not.

Cross-voting in Himachal Pradesh not only dealt a blow to Congress candidate Abhishek Manu Singhvi in what was considered a very safe seat, but also challenged the very existence of the state government. On the pretext of the Rajya Sabha elections, the old discontent that had existed since the formation of the government in the state and which the Congress leadership had not made any effective effort to remove, came up in smoke. Although the current government at the center is getting the support of many parties outside the NDA on every important occasion, the fact remains that even at the end of the current tenure, the ruling coalition has not been able to secure a majority in the upper house of parliament after ruling for ten consecutive years. Even after Tuesday's victory, the total number of NDA members in the Rajya Sabha is four short of the number (121) required for a majority. Cross-voting is a potent weapon for rulers to cross this line.

However, it should not be forgotten that changing the allegiance of legislators due to greed and pressure is a tendency to undermine democracy, which any party proclaims as its strength or victory brings into question the democratic consciousness of the country. The dignity of the Rajya Sabha has been undervalued for a long time, because the upper house of the Parliament is really for those precious pearls of the Indian ocean of people who cannot get a referendum and without their leadership, the people become mute. But instead of great artists, scholars and great men of that level, politicians take current politicians to Parliament through Rajya Sabha. Most of them are able to contest elections. Also, Lok Sabha losers are called above the votes of the MLAs to cut the nose of the plebiscite, which is the height of abuse of this system.
