- Govt in mood to increase export quota: 217 lakh tonnes of sugar produced in first four months of new season

The sugar market and industry in the country has witnessed a rapid change of equations recently. At home, the new season of sugar starts from the month of October. Currently, the sugar season of 2022-23 is going on. Considering the four months of this new season, October, November, December 2022 and January 2023, market experts said that during this four-month period, there has been a slow growth of 3 to 4 percent in the production of sugar in the country. According to the Indian Sugar Mills Association ESMA, if we look at the figures till the end of January, around 515 to 516 sugar mills are active in the country. This figure was 508 to 509 in this period last year. In this period of this year, about 198 to 199 sugar mills have been active in Maharashtra, while in Uttar Pradesh this figure has come to 116 to 117 and in Karnataka the figure has come to 72 to 73 mills. Counting without diversion towards ethanol, the production of sugar in the first four months of the current sugar season in the country has been recorded at around 216 to 217 lakh tonnes, which was 203 to 204 lakh tonnes in this period of the previous season. If we look state wise in the first four months of the current season, this figure is 58 to 59 lakh tonnes in Uttar Pradesh. In Maharashtra, this figure has come to 81 to 82 lakh tonnes. In Karnataka, this figure is recorded as 46 to 47 lakh tonnes. Meanwhile, sugar prices in the world market recently rose to a six-year high. At home too, there were signs of rising market prices. There have also been recent indications that the government will further increase the export quota of sugar from the country.

Meanwhile, in the first four months of the current season till the end of January, the total diversion of sugar to ethanol production has been 22 to 23 lakh tonnes as compared to 16 to 17 lakh tonnes diversion of sugar to ethanol production in the previous season. If we look at such diversion state wise, 7 to 8 lakh tonnes have been reported in Uttar Pradesh, 7 to 8 lakh tonnes in Maharashtra and 7 to 8 lakh tonnes in Karnataka. After deducting the diversion of sugar to ethanol, the actual production of sugar in the country has been around 193 to 194 lakh tonnes in the first four months of the current sugar season as against 187 to 188 lakh tonnes in this period in the previous season. Counting state wise, this figure has been recorded as 51 to 52 lakh tonnes in Uttar Pradesh, 73 to 74 lakh tonnes in Maharashtra and 39 to 40 lakh tonnes in Karnataka.

Meanwhile, total sugar production in Maharashtra for the current sugar season which was initially estimated at 138 lakh tonnes has now been estimated at 128 lakh tonnes. Maharashtra is likely to produce around 20 crore liters of ethanol. And for this, around 16 lakh tons of sugar is likely to be used. Sugar Commissioner of Maharashtra said that ethanol is being produced in various 80 projects in Maharashtra. Sugarcane production has increased in Maharashtra this year. But the recovery of sugar from sugarcane has been less than expected. Meanwhile, according to the All India Sugar Traders Association, till February 9, sugar exports from India in the current season have increased to around 27 lakh 83 thousand tonnes. During this period, there has been a special export of sugar from India, especially to Bangladesh and Indonesia. Till the month of May, the government has allowed the export of 60 lakh tonnes of sugar from the country. The total export of sugar from India in the season of 2021-22 was 112 lakh tonnes. Meanwhile, this year, given that the central government has recently increased its focus on increasing the consumption of clean and green energy, experts are pointing to the possibility of an increase in the consumption of ethanol from now on. Apart from this, denatured ethyl alcohol has been exempted from basic customs duty and due to this ethanol blending is likely to increase.
