Lekhjokha of Himachal Pradesh

The Himachal Pradesh assembly elections are over and the votes of its people have been captured in the EVMs. The first round has been completed in Gujarat. After the second round, the counting of votes in both the states will be done in parallel. Snowfall has started in Himachal Pradesh after polling. Will this ice freeze the ruling BJP or will it revive the Congress which has been already frozen for a long time and is now struggling to come to power? - That question is echoing here in the hills and in the foothills. Bharatiya Janata Party has worked hard to maintain its power in Himachal on the back of its victories in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur at the beginning of this year, but here the strength of Congress is many times greater than in Gujarat, Punjab or Delhi. In this assembly election, the Congress is missing the late politician Virbhadra Singh, who was the face of the Congress here for the last four decades.

The birth chart of Congress is now such that there is an internal clash in every state. Every leader works to prevent others from growing, like in Gujarat. Congress has now lost all resources to win elections. In other states of the country too, Congress's base is negligible. It also has less impact on the public mind. BJP National President J. P. This is the native state of Nadda. He has also been a minister here and has also been the leader of the opposition in the legislature. BJP hopes that their hard work will pay off. The BJP's main campaign slogan here is a double engine government. Against this, Congress says that there has been stagnation in Himachal for the last five years and the government has not done any development work.

The BJP high command has worked tirelessly here for the repeat of Chief Minister Jairam Thakur's government. But like Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh also has a history that there is a change every five years. The Congress has promised to revive the old pension scheme here. Sukhwinder, who has been the state president of the Congress for the last ten consecutive years, is the frontrunner in the race to become the Chief Minister this time. There are other faces but Sukhwinder is also popular. If Congress wins, days will be good for Sukhwinder. Sukhwinder took over the entire helm of the Congress campaign before the elections. The sad thing for them is that they got tired of pleading with the high command but neither Rahul nor Sonia visited Himachal Pradesh even for a single day for campaigning. It is still a mystery why the Congress high command neglected Himachal elections so badly.

Priyanka was sent after Sukhwinder made a lot of appearances and that too for a very short period, for a short region. Congress has a large fan base in Himachal. Even so, the Congress executive has not paid full attention to this time's assembly elections. BJP has not declared its opinion on the old pension scheme, so all the employee unions here had declared a resolution in favor of the Congress before the elections. Out of the total 68 assembly seats, twenty-two seats are where the party's own rebels are standing against the official candidates of the BJP. BJP's refusal to give tickets to nineteen sitting MLAs is also a reason for this situation. Constituencies of two ministers have been changed and one of those who were not given tickets was also an incumbent minister.

Like in Gujarat, here also BJP has lost the wisdom of ticket capping scheme. Six-seven seats are clearly where the rebels will hurt the BJP candidates and benefit the Congress. Even though Sukhwinder is ahead, if the Congress wins, the queue of contenders for the post of Chief Minister will be long. It is here like in Gujarat that the top leaders are bitter enemies of each other. It is not like this in BJP, BJP will gain and Congress will lose due to fog on leadership. Nine Congress rebels are in the fray. But the Congress has sent home tickets to all the sitting MLAs. They have not got the experience of being thrown or lobbying like in Gujarat.
