After drugs in Punjab, liquor is sold, street by street


- Honorable government claimed that cheap liquor will be available in Punjab, so people will not indulge in drugs and youth will stop getting wasted. This argument was ridiculous and six months later it has been proved. Punjabis have not escaped from the clutches of drugs and have started to get addicted to alcohol.

Punjab, once infamous as 'Udta Punjab' due to drug contamination, is now caught in a new vortex of intoxication. According to the official admission of Bhagwant Maan Sarkar of Aam Aadmi Party of Punjab, the business of making illegal liquor has flourished in Punjab and despite the efforts of the government, new units are being opened so this is a big problem for the Punjab government.

Due to the death of a large number of people in the lynching that took place in Punjab years ago, the then government of Punjab registered several cases but the police did nothing further. In September 2020, the Punjab and Haryana High Court rejected the plea to hand over the investigation of these cases to the CBI. An application has been filed in the Supreme Court against the judgment of the High Court. The petition has also demanded a ban on illegally sold liquor in Punjab. At the same time, there was a demand to hand over the investigation of large-scale liquor trafficking from Punjab to other states to the CBI.

During the hearing of this application, the Supreme Court showed a strong tone and said that, looking at the details given in the application, it seems that there are illegal liquor manufacturing units in Punjab. The Supreme Court also mentioned the contamination of drugs in Punjab and said that seeing that drugs and alcohol are sold openly in Punjab, the youth will get drunk. The Supreme Court ordered the Hon'ble Government to submit an account of the measures taken to curb the sale of illegal liquor.

Mann has defended the government in the affidavit filed following the Supreme Court's order, but has also claimed that in the last two months, the police have cleared 13,200 illegal liquor units i.e. liquor breweries. Apart from this, more than 35 thousand cases have been done. The government has also collected a penalty of crores of rupees from the brewery owners.

Not satisfied with this answer to the Supreme Court, the lawyer of the Punjab government had to admit that, while the police destroy the liquor furnaces, new furnaces are opened like a cat's top exploding in the monsoon. Due to this, the situation is now that in Punjab, liquor is made from street to street and alcohol reaches from house to house. It can be said that rivers of alcohol flow in the streets of Punjab.

The lawyer also made a lame defense that the liquor produced in the home-made distilleries in Punjab is not for sale but for their own consumption. The Supreme Court has also directed the Punjab government on this issue to take strict action by holding the police responsible in the areas where liquor breweries are flourishing. In this way, the youth will be ruined by alcohol and drugs.

The Supreme Court has asked to submit an answer on what the government will do to fight this pollution by next Monday, so there is a break in this case for now, but it is not difficult to estimate the situation in Punjab due to this hearing. Punjab is still not free from the drug scourge, where it is ravaged by alcoholism. It is said to be unfortunate that the Bhagwant Maan government cannot stop the liquor train.

One of the reasons why the Hon'ble government cannot stop the breweries is that Punjabis are fond of country liquor. There is no liquor ban in Punjab and liquor is sold freely. Punjab is one of the states with the highest consumption of liquor in the country and the interesting thing is that the consumption of Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) is higher in other states of the country while the consumption of country liquor is higher in Punjab. Punjabis drank 27.5 crore bottles of IMFL) and Punjab Maid Liquor or Punjab Medium Liquor PML in the financial year 2021-22. PML is also called Lahan.

Considering that 66 percent of the liquor sales were of Punjab Made Liquor i.e. Country Liquor, Punjabis drank 180 million bottles of Country Liquor last year. Lahan is different from the country liquor found in Gujarat. In old Hindi movies, the liquor shown in different colors is Lahan, which means country liquor. The price of Lahan is very less than IMFL and intoxication is high so Punjabis prefer Lahan. Due to this, no matter how hard the Hon'ble government tries, it cannot stop Lahan.

Street by street liquor factory in Punjab is not only a failure of law and order but also a failure of the excise policy made by the Hon'ble Government. The Bhagwant Mann government had reduced the excise duty on all liquor to one per cent in the new excise policy announced in June to reduce the consumption of country liquor.

Apart from this, all the other cesses that were levied were merged in the excise. Due to this, the price of liquor in Punjab fell by 60 percent and was less than not only Haryana but also Union Union Chandigarh.

Chandigarh being a union territory, liquor was cheaper than both Punjab and Haryana. Due to the new policy, beer and Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) have become cheaper even from Chandigarh. Earlier, the price of liquor in Punjab was 40% higher than that of Haryana, so liquor used to enter Punjab from Haryana. Due to the new policy, the smuggling of liquor into Punjab has stopped as liquor has started getting 15 percent less from Haryana, but liquor has started going to other states from Punjab. However, that is a completely different issue.

The honorable government claimed that cheap liquor will be available in Punjab, so people will not indulge in drugs and the youth will stop getting wasted. This argument was ridiculous and six months later it has been proved. Punjabis have not escaped from the clutches of drugs and have started to get addicted to alcohol. No matter what kind of alcohol, if consumed in excess, it destroys a person, so this queue is big.

Aam Aadmi Party launched a front against the contamination of drugs in Punjab. Kejriwal has accused former Punjab government minister and Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia of being the mastermind of the drugs network. Later Kejriwal apologized is a different matter but AAP came to power by playing politics on the issue of drugs.

Now that liquor is ruining the youth under his rule, the Bhagwant Mann government should save the youth of Punjab by wiping out the liquor breweries.

Lakhs of youth in Punjab addicted to drugs

The problem of drugs in Punjab has been very serious for the last decade or so. In Punjab in 2017, the issue of drugs has increased. The Congress came to power by raising this issue. After Captain Amarinder Singh came to power, a special task force was created to fight drug pollution, de-addiction centers were established everywhere. There are currently three and a half hundred government and private de-addiction centers in Punjab. About five and a half lakh people have been treated in these centers in five years. Given that two percent of Punjab's population of 2.80 crores have already taken treatment to get rid of drug addiction, the number of arrests will be very high indeed. The extent of drug contamination in Punjab came to light during the lockdown. Due to Corona, drugs have been stopped due to lockdown. Millions of drug addicts approach de-addiction centers to avoid addiction. If Maan does not wake up, this will happen due to alcohol. Since Punjab is connected with Pakistan by land border, there is also a suspicion that Pakistan is smuggling liquor into Punjab.
