The problem of Indian students in Canada increased

- After the diplomatic relations between India and Canada became tense, the fear of attack on Indian students has increased. The central government has announced an advisory to be aware of hate crime

A total of 1.4 lakh Indians live in Canada and 7.7 lakh are Sikhs. Indians make up 3.7 percent of Canada's total population. Canada has recently become a hot favorite among Indians who want to live abroad. America's visa policy became stricter during Trump's tenure, so living in Britain has also become difficult after Brexit. Since Canada's visa policy is relatively relaxed, a large number of Indians visit Canada every year. According to Canadian government statistics, 6,37,860 foreign students are studying in Canadian institutes and the number of Indian students is 3,19,130. Half of the total foreign students studying in Canada are Indians.

Apart from that, the number of Indians who arrived in Canada in a single year with a work permit was 1,18,095 lakh in 2022. Canada is the second most popular country for Indian citizens to set up after the US. Layoffs are going on in the US IT sector. IT professionals, including a number of Indians working in American IT companies on H-1B visas, lost their jobs and were looking for other jobs.

At exactly the same time, the Government of Canada made an important announcement. After the Canadian government announced that H-1B visa holders would be given Canadian work permits through direct entry, there was a scramble to get Canadian visas. Canada's visa scheme has been so well received because of the provision of study or work visas to the family members of visa holders who have obtained work permits.

The fact that Indian citizens in Canada are increasing year by year is also a cause of envy. Attacks on Indians have increased in Canada in recent times. Indians in Canada have been targeted since the Indian-origin truck drivers went on strike a few months ago. The white citizens of Canada are looking at the Indians with hatred. In the same period, a local white citizen shot and killed an Indian student to inflame Indians.

After that, the Indian government criticized the incident of hate crime in Canada's Bhagwat Gita Park last year and suggested the Canadian government to take action against the accused. After the park was renamed after Bhagwat Gita, some miscreants came and vandalized the park, but there was outrage among Indians as the police did not take any special action. In Canada last year alone, there were five-seven incidents of small-scale rooftop hate crimes. Two attackers vandalized a temple in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. The assailants wearing black clothes and carrying a buccaneer targeted the temple and wrote anti-India slogans on the wall.

The attack was likely to have been carried out by supporters of Khalistan. At that time Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar raised the issue of attacks on Indians with the Foreign Minister of Canada and asked him to take appropriate action. India has proposed to the Canadian government to ban pro-Khalistan organizations.

However, the incidents of hate crime did not decrease even after that. Not only the attacks, but a student was killed last year. 21-year-old Karthik Vasudev from Ghaziabad went to Canada in January to study MBA. He was also doing a part-time job in addition to his studies. He was killed in the subway while he was going from the metro to a part-time job. After Karthik did not reach his office, his friend called his parents in India. The police did not even accept the demand of sending the photo of the Indian-based parents for identification and misled the incident into a robbery incident. The Indians offered to investigate the student's murder as a result of a hate crime, but the police refused to investigate it. Indian organizations protested against this attitude of the police.

The series of hate crimes in Canada against Indian students is going on unabated. A student was attacked in Ontario before Prime Minister Justin Trudeau arrived in India to attend the G20.

The incident was still fresh and when Trudeau arrived in Canada, another incident of attack came to light. A 17-year-old student was attacked with beer spray in the province of British Columbia. The incident took place when the student was going home from school. In March this year, a 21-year-old college student was attacked by local students of his college in British Columbia province and threatened to drop out of college.

A student was killed in June. Siddharth Nath, an Indian officer based in Canada, informed at that time that Gurwinder Singh was working part-time in a Canadian food delivery company in addition to studying. The killers ordered food. They tried to hijack Gurvinder's car, which had arrived for food delivery, and then fatally attacked it when it became alarmed. The seriously injured student succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.

After Canada-India diplomatic relations became strained over Nijjar's murder, there were fears that Indians, especially Hindus, would be targeted. The Ministry of External Affairs has issued an advisory for Indian nationals and Indian students living in Canada. It said that there is a possibility of hate crime in Canada. Such incidents can increase especially by targeting students. Be alert against it and if necessary contact the Indian Embassy in Canada immediately.

According to Canadian media reports, there have been 19 incidents of small-scale attacks on Indian students in 2023 and one has been killed, but the police have charged only three accused with hate crimes. In the remaining cases, an attempt was made to dismiss the case by giving all other reasons. Reports have expressed fears that India-Canada diplomatic relations will pose the biggest challenge to the security of Indian students if they remain strained. If there were such attacks even when the relations were harmonious, now the situation can be more serious than expected when there is resentment among Indians in addition to the natives of Canada. Both the countries have to make joint efforts to ensure that the safety of the students is not compromised in all other matters.
