A glimpse of the first Republic Day celebrated in 1950

The then President of Indonesia Sukarno attended as the Chief Guest

Today is 26th January. Republic Day celebration will be seen all day today. Everyone is saluting India's progress with pride. The 74th Republic Day parade will thrill people to see tableaus depicting the culture of different states.

How was this day celebrated 74 years ago? The first Republic Day was celebrated in 1950. As today's celebration is taking place in the midst of bitter cold, January 26, 1950 was also bitterly cold. Incidentally today is also Thursday and it was also Thursday when the first Republic Day was celebrated. Now people use the 26th January holiday to go for a walk or watch movies, but in 1950 people never got tired of saying Maro Desh..Maro Desh.

As Gamegam is celebrated on 26th now, Gamegam tricolor was hoisted in 1950 also. Today, people have stylish jackets and sweaters, comfortable hand gloves, warm innerwear, but in 1950s such variety was not seen.

On the 26th of 1950 in Delhi, those who came to participate in the parade and the spectators wore two clothes instead of one to protect themselves from the cold and wrapped a piece of cloth on their heads.

Where was there anything like mobile technology in the 1950s? There was no way to contact the people who came to see the parade if they got separated. In earlier times, if children were lost in the fair, there would be an announcement on the loudspeaker like 'Babo of four years has been found...', remember?

Today people have to be injected with deshdaze, but in the 1950s, deshdaze was naturally spreading among the masses. The fact that the constitution of the independent country was formed and it came into force on 26th January was visible to all.

Many people had brought their children on their shoulders to watch the flag hoisting. Back then there was no strict security checking like today, no sniffer dogs roaming the grounds. There was no fear of an attack from anywhere. Simple police used to take care of the entire system. It was only to see that no one entered the crowd with a weapon.

A place where lakhs of people have gathered would be a better time than cleaning up afterwards. Look fun. After the grand celebration at the Red Fort on 26th January 1950, there was no special need for cleaning the next day. This shows the sense of self-discipline in the people.

The country became independent on August 15, 1947, but after three years, it is said that the country got true independence. The whole country was waiting for a well-defined constitution. That is why the Republic Day of January 26 was celebrated with great pride. In 1950, three weeks of practice were conducted before the celebration of this historic day. On this day, the first President of the country Dr. Rajendra Prasad's tenure was about to begin. The 26th date was chosen because the slogan of Purna Swaraj was raised on January 26, 1929.

From 1950 to 1954, Republic Day parades were held at Irvine Stadium (now National Stadium), Kings Way, Red Fart (Red Fort) and Ramlila Maidan. From 1955 the parade shifted to Rajpath. Every year the head of each country is present as the chief guest in this parade. In the first parade on January 26, 1950, the then president of Indonesia, Sukarno, attended as the chief guest.

The President of India took a salute from the bodyguards and then hoisted the national flag amid a 21-gun salute. At that time, there was no live telecast, no social media, but the entire atmosphere was enraptured by the spirit of patriotism shining in the speech and behavior of each and every citizen.
